Discovering Your Purpose
The Path of Intention, Self-Compassion, and Resilience
In the unpredictable journey of life, the search for purpose often serves as a guiding light amid the chaos. This pursuit, also referred to as finding our intentions, is a profound exploration that can provide both immediate relief and long-term satisfaction. However, identifying this purpose can be particularly intimidating during stressful times.
The Burden of Defining Purpose
During crises, the pressure to articulate our intentions can feel overwhelming, adding to the stress we are already experiencing. My recent diagnosis of ovarian cancer in October 2024 created profound uncertainty about where my life would be going, leaving me paralyzed at times and questioning my direction and purpose. It was during this time that I realized the importance of identifying my long-term goals. Rather than becoming lost in the chaos, I chose to focus on what truly mattered—my core values, aspirations, and the legacy I wanted to create. This newfound clarity became my compass, guiding me toward decisions that resonated with my true self.
Cultivating Resilience
Resilience represents our incredible ability to rise after a fall and continue moving forward. It involves tapping into our inner strength—our unique superpower—during life’s challenges. This is where intention can contribute to our thought process, having a profound impact on our ability to survive.
Reflecting on my experiences, I vividly remember receiving the news from my surgeon in October 2024 that two small tumors were found after my total preventative hysterectomy for BRCA1. Just six months into launching my business and while single-handedly raising three adolescent boys, I faced six cycles of chemotherapy. Confronted with these challenges, I wondered how I could balance my responsibilities while generating income. Instead of succumbing to despair, I seized the opportunity for personal growth. I began exploring new interests, connecting with inspiring business mentors, and engaging in self-improvement practices such as meditation, journaling, and physical fitness. This shift in perspective empowered me to build resilience, reinforcing the notion that setbacks can serve as catalysts for clarity and transformation.
Extracting Insights from Challenges
A critical aspect of developing resilience lies in our ability to learn from adversity. When we adopt a victim mentality and dwell on the question, "Why me?", we risk becoming engulfed by our circumstances. Instead, it is critical to step back, pause, and allow ourselves the space for reflection.
I have discovered that simple activities—such as taking a long walk, enjoying a vigorous workout, or spending time in nature—can significantly improve my outlook. Adjust these practices to suit your physical abilities; for example, if you are recovering from an injury, consider sitting outside in the morning, absorbing the sights and sounds of nature while sipping your favorite drink. Aim to be fully present, taking deep breaths, and immersing yourself in your surroundings.
During a particularly demanding week, I decided to disconnect from social media for a few days because I found the pressure to engage while feeling stressed to be overwhelming. This break allowed me to clear my mind and focus on what I could learn from my challenges. I reflected deeply on my difficulties, possible solutions, and the intentions behind those solutions. Upon returning to my situation, I felt rejuvenated and creatively equipped to tackle the issues with a solid plan.
The Role of Self-Compassion
Self-compassion is an integral part of this journey. It is a skill to be cultivated and practiced, much like learning to ride a bike or master a new sport. In moments of hardship, we often impose unrealistic expectations on ourselves, neglecting to extend the same kindness and patience we would offer to others in similar situations.
I have learned that when I am feeling overwhelmed with guilt after making a mistake, instead of chastising myself, I pause, take a deep breath, and envision giving myself a gentle hug. This act of self-kindness allows me to acknowledge my struggles without judgment. In this way, I resist my perfectionist tendencies by realizing that it is perfectly acceptable to feel upset or overwhelmed sometimes; experiencing these emotions is a natural part of being human.
Embracing Your Journey
As you embark on your own quest to discover your purpose, remember that it comprises a blend of intention, self-compassion, and resilience. Grant yourself the freedom to explore, to feel, and to evolve.
Through my recent experiences with a cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy, and single parenthood, I have come to understand that every step we take on this journey not only enhances our own lives but also enriches the lives of those around us. By embracing our struggles and sharing our stories, we create a ripple effect of empathy and understanding in a world that often feels disconnected.
Embrace the journey of life—your life is 100% yours to navigate, and each step forward is a testament to your resilience and commitment to living mindfully.

Hello Rachel, I hope you’re doing well and you’re going to kick cancers ass soon enough! Really inspiring story showing your resilience in times like this. I also look at my mom who had a similar experience to yours raising me and my sister and it took a lot, but I always envy her because she stood strong and never got engulfed by her fears or circumstances. It was tough at times, but she remained who she was and never waivered and she’s been in remission ever since. I know you can do it! You have a support system around you. Good luck on this journey!💪❤️💪❤️
